The 4 Seasons Residency grew out of a meeting of the minds at the 2019 National Winter Playwrights Retreat in Creede, Colorado, including leaders from the National New Play Network, Tofte Lake Center, Ignition Arts, Seven Devils New Play Foundry, and the HBMG Foundation's National Winter Playwright Retreat. In an effort to offer playwrights more consistent support and broader opportunities, the founders of 4 Seasons Residency set out to provide year-long support for one playwright at a time by offering time, space, and resources to support the playwright’s particular needs.
In 2022, after the unfortunate shuttering of the National Winter Playwrights Retreat, LAUNCH PAD at UC Santa Barbara joined the 4 Seasons Residency Team.
Our first recipient was Jessica Huang in 2020-21. Our second recipient was Franky Gonzalez in 2021-2022. Our 2023 recipient is AZ Espinoza.

In its 18th year, LAUNCH PAD brings professional playwrights to UC Santa Barbara to develop and produce their work side by side with students, faculty and guest artists. LAUNCH PAD’s centerpiece is the yearly Preview Production. A fully realized production, the new play stays in previews throughout the run of the show, and the writer continues revising as the piece evolves through performances. LAUNCH PAD also shepherds new plays each year through the Summer Reading Series: New Plays in Process, LAUNCH PAD Pop-Ups, and the Amplify Reading Series Festival. LEARN MORE HERE.
